Praesidium Financial Advisors

You Were Trained for Emergencies. Not for Money.

No one warned you that the pension might not be enough. That overtime could become a trap. That burnout doesn't just hit your body. It hits your bank account too.

The Wealth Op: A comprehensive financial framework designed to help first responders pursue early retirement goals. Powered by Praesidium Financial Advisors.

The 5 Money Mistakes First Responders Make

Most first responders were never taught how to build wealth, protect their family, or plan for life after the job. Here's what's keeping so many stuck.

Mistake #1

Relying Too Heavily on Overtime

⚠ The Trap:

Overtime becomes the plan, not the bonus. It feels like progress, but it's really a pressure valve with no long-term payoff.

✅ The Shift:

Use overtime for wealth-building, not lifestyle inflation. Treat it like fuel for your future, not funding for the next Amazon cart.

Mistake #2

"Set It and Forget It" on Your 457(b)

⚠ The Trap:

Most first responders have no idea what they're actually invested in, how it's performing, or if it aligns with their goals.

✅ The Shift:

Your career evolved. Your retirement plan should too. Revisit your allocations, risk level, and contribution rate today.

Mistake #3

No Backup Plan if You're Injured or Burn Out

⚠ The Trap:

An injury, illness, or burnout could take you out of the game early and leave you financially exposed.

✅ The Shift:

Build wealth outside of your job so you're not dependent on a finish line you may never cross.

Mistake #4

Trusting the Pension Will Be Enough

⚠ The Trap:

It doesn't always keep up with inflation, and it often won't replace your full income. PERS contributions keep rising.

✅ The Shift:

Treat your pension as a foundation, not a full solution. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Mistake #5

Not Being on the Same Page With Your Spouse

⚠ The Trap:

Your family could be left scrambling, confused, and unprotected. Financial stress is a leading cause of divorce.

✅ The Shift:

Wealth is built together, not in the dark. Create shared visibility and walk through finances together.

Meet Michael Peel

The First Responders Advisor

Michael Peel is a first responder, licensed financial advisor, business owner, teacher, and lifelong student. Most importantly, he is a husband to his wife Holli of 19+ years and father to his son Micah. Michael believes family must come first and that people have a duty to build generational wealth and create a lasting legacy for those they love.

Michael began his career in the financial industry, working with high-net-worth individuals and non-profits on tax and accounting needs. He later founded his own firm, entered the commercial self-storage real estate space, and accepted a Chief Financial Officer role, helping build a $70-million-plus company.

At age 31, Michael transitioned into the first-responder career he had long desired to pursue. He has served in police, fire, and EMS roles, worked in specialized assignments, and currently serves in the Detective Bureau.

Recognizing that meaningful guidance requires more than experience alone, Michael committed (while serving full-time as a first responder) to an intensive season of study, becoming a licensed financial advisor. He is a co-founder of Praesidium Financial LLC, a firm created to serve first responders and their families with clarity, integrity, and a service-first approach to financial guidance.

"Through The Wealth Op, Michael shares his belief that financial freedom is attainable for those who serve others, and that a strong financial foundation allows first responders to focus on what matters most: family, purpose, and legacy."

Ramie's comprehensive planning approach goes beyond financial products. He focuses on creating income plans and investment strategies that protect wealth from taxes, inflation, interest rate concerns, and market risk, while taking estate plans into consideration.

"Comprehensive planning means going beyond a financial product conversation and focusing on a plan that encompasses the three main phases in our clients' lives and educates them on how to plan accordingly for each."

Why You Need a Plan

Good leaders surround themselves with people smarter than them

Michael shares a story from his finance days: A $500 million client sat around a conference table surrounded by attorneys, analysts, lenders, and advisors, paying $10-15K in hourly fees just to get sound advice.

When asked why, the client said: "I need a plan. And I trust people that I've surrounded myself to give me sound advice, because good leaders surround themselves with people smarter than them."

You guys are leaders of your home. Do you surround yourselves with people smarter than you in the areas of your finances? Any legal issues? Insurance pieces?

Michael came from the finance world and still found someone better to help him navigate his own financial future. He realized: "The trajectory I think I'm on, I'm not really going there as quickly as I want to."

Retirement Definition

"Living the lifestyle you want to live without the fear of running out of money."

Financial Stress Destroys Marriages

If your finances are not in order, it's one of the leading indicators of a marriage that may fail

The Downward Spiral

1

Bad budgeting → you work more overtime

2

More overtime → you're not home as much

3

Not home → marriage starts falling apart because you're not present

4

You don't show up to recitals, sporting events

5

Your spouse: "I hate this job, they take your time, they suck your life, they never say thank you"

The Solution

If we can balance out your finances, allow you to maybe work less and be home more, keep the marriage intact and a healthier home, then you can take that to the street and hopefully show up better with a clearer headspace.

Kind of makes sense.
